Free or cheap, what’s the fastest way to get lots of website traffic?
Free: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) mixed with related theme-based Page Rank backlinks from .edu or .gov sites.
Cheap: Create a Google Adwords account, and do some research using their free keyword tool to identify long tail keyword phrase related to your website pages that have a low (0.05 – 0.10) cost per click (CPC). Bid on these keyword phrase, to obtain one of the fastest ways to get relevant traffic to your site.
I’d say if you comfortable with SEO go with free, if you’re not as comfortable go with cheap.

There is no right or wrong by using the free or cheap traffic.
Everything will depend on your ability to drive the traffic
